How to thread a sewing machine, the right way

Bad threading is the root cause behind more "broken" sewing machines than every mechanical fault combined — it just wears disguises: loops under the fabric, snapping thread, jams, skipped stitches. The good news is that nearly every home machine, from a 1970s mechanical Singer to a new computerized Brother, threads in the same five stations. Learn the sequence once and you can thread anything.

The universal top-thread path

1. Spool pin, with the right cap

Seat the spool so thread unwinds freely (horizontal pins want the end coming off the top; vertical pins spin the spool). On horizontal pins, close the spool cap against the spool — a missing or loose cap lets thread snag on the spool's notch mid-seam.

2. Upper thread guide and down the channel

Hook the thread through the first metal guide, then follow the channel down toward you. You should feel light, smooth resistance — never a scrape.

3. Between the tension discs

The thread must drop between the tension discs, not ride over them. This is why the presser foot stays up: raising it separates the discs so the thread can seat fully. Pull the thread gently side to side; correctly seated thread has a faint spring to it.

4. Up and through the take-up lever

Bring the thread back up the second channel and through the eye of the take-up lever, right to left on nearly every brand. If the lever is hidden, the needle isn't at its highest point — turn the handwheel. Missing this station is why a machine sews three stitches and jams.

5. Down to the needle guides and the eye

Follow the thread down through the last guide(s) above the needle, then thread the eye front to back (a handful of models differ — the manual's diagram wins). Pull 10–15 cm of tail through. If your machine has a built-in needle threader, this is its moment.

The 30-second sanity check: foot up, hold the thread tail lightly, turn the handwheel one full revolution toward you. The needle should dive, and rise pulling a loop of bobbin thread with it. Fish the loop out, lay both tails back under the foot, and sew on a scrap. If that test passes, threading is right — whatever else is wrong, it isn't this.

Why does the presser foot have to be UP while threading?

Raising the presser foot opens the tension discs. With the foot down the discs are clamped shut, the thread rides on top of them instead of between them, and you get the classic "loops under the fabric" result even though everything looked right. It is the single most important detail in threading.

Which way does the bobbin go in?

For most top-loading (drop-in) machines, the thread should come off the bobbin counter-clockwise — like a letter "P" when you look at it. Front-loading cases usually want clockwise — like a "9". Your manual’s diagram wins over any rule of thumb; an upside-down bobbin sews badly in ways that look exactly like a tension fault.

Do I really need to rethread both top and bobbin when something goes wrong?

What is the take-up lever and why does it matter?

The metal arm with an eye that moves up and down as the handwheel turns. It pulls the exact amount of top thread needed for each stitch. If the thread misses it, a few stitches form and then everything collapses into a jam — machines will not sew reliably without the take-up lever threaded.
